The holiday season is almost upon us and I am starting to feel a wee bit excited!  I am heading to the beach and I know what you’re probably thinking, ‘Kristen you were just in Thailand!!’ This is correct, however this beach holiday is actually in Australia, my home country. I will be heading back to Oz to visit my family and friends and let’s not forget, to have some serious fun in the Australian sun.

While it will be (or should be) lovely and sunny, hopefully there will be an opportunity (or several) to do a bit of baking.  Like any typical Australian, I love to lay in the sun and soak up some vitamin D.  However I am not naïve to the fact that there is a ginormous hole in the ozone layer, which lingers right above Oz.  Therefore before I bake, I pack my beach bag full of some serious summer beach essentials.

I am not entirely a kill joy or a hand break to happiness with all my SPF 50+ blah blah blah conversation. I always ensure that my beach essentials include a touch of glamor, with a hint of practicality.  Let’s face it, I like to look glamorous even if it is at the beach where I will be sweaty, sandy and salty.

So here are six things you will find in my beach bag this Australian summer;

  1. Of course SPF 50+.  I used to be a SPF 30+ wearer, however realised that if you can go stronger, why not!! For my body, I wear Invisible Zinc 4 hr Water Resistant natural Zinc Oxide Shield.  It is great for sensitive skin, its water resistant (for 4 hours), protects against both nasties; UVA and UVB and it’s transparent.  I will also apply this to my face as well, avoiding the eye area.

  2. I love a clear complexion and yes this still applies even while I am beaching it. I usually leave my CC crème’s and foundations at home, however I will pack my Invisible Zinc UV silk shield foundation SPF 30+ UVA-UVB , as it adds additional protection to my face. It also acts as a 3 in 1; zinc sunscreen, foundation and powder finish. I go for the medium coverage, which suits my skin perfectly.

  1. My trusty Country Road beach towel.  Country Road always does the best beach towels. They’re so soft and HUGE.

  2. For my hair I usually pack a leave in conditioner and use it after I have been in the water. Salt, chlorine and sun play havoc on my highlights, leaving my hair tangly and knotty. I am a fan of Label M’s leave in conditioner available from Toni & Guy salons.  It moisterurisers, strengthens and protects against frizz, plus it has a delicious smell to it.

  3. Water proof mascara.  I do realise that I will be at the beach, but I sometimes I feel naked leaving the house without it. I love long lashes and honestly can say that my Maybelline, The Falsies Volum’ Express gives you the effect of extensions.  It is also water proof, which means no more panda eyes.

  4. I always prefer a wide brimmed hat and in case I meet the girls at a café before or after I head to the water, I like to wear my mint Bianca Adventurer Akubra by Bec & Bridge.  It is the perfect street to beach (or vice versa) protection.
